Twenty-nine-year-old Anna (Whittaker, Broadchurch) has a dead-end job and lives in a shed in her mother’s garden, an existence she seems to have adopted in response to the death of her twin brother – her grieving process includes making home sci-fi movies featuring her face-painted thumbs.
Oblivious of the awkward romantic advances of a co-worker, and threatened with eviction by her increasingly exasperated mother (Ashbourne, Jericho), Anna strikes up an unlikely but mutually supportive friendship with a troubled young neighbour (Ozzy Myers) whose mother has just been hospitalised.
Based on debut director Rachel Tunnard’s own BAFTA-nominated short, Emotional Fusebox, this offbeat rites-of-passage movie is awash with dark humour and a distinctive poignancy.
