Junior Conform Editor / Machine Room Operator

Dirty Looks are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated self-starter to join our friendly and close-knit team. This position is a great introduction to a career in film postproduction with a small but well-established post-production company. Dirty Looks specialises in picture finishing long-form work, often on award-winning independent feature films, and has over 10 years’ experience in the industry with studios in London and Brussels.

Day-to-day tasks performed by the applicant will involve a solid level of technical expertise, excellent communication skills and meticulous attention to detail. The applicant will be required to have a working knowledge of common editing software, such as Avid and Premiere, in order to manage the transfer of footage from the offline edit into the online and grading environment.

The applicant will be trained in conforming in Baselight to match editorial turnovers (Quicktimes and EDLs etc) to setup Baselight projects which are ready for the colourist to grade. They will also be required to organise data from production drives onto the system using a consistent, logical and easily understood approach. A basic knowledge of Linux or Unix will be desirable to help this process.
A demonstrable knowledge of film and television camera formats will be required, along with some international standards and technical practices.

The applicant is also responsible for mastering deliverables such as Quicktimes, Blurays etc. that will require a perfectionist approach to the quality control of image and sound plus the labeling and physical packaging of the final item. Technical review of all deliverables is essential, so an eye for detail and understanding of potential technical faults is required. The applicant could also be expected to develop basic title cards and credit rollers so a working knowledge of Adobe suite would be an advantage.

Additionally, the applicant will need to have strong communication skills, as they will work closely with their team-members, external editors and VFX artists etc.

As Dirty Looks is a small independent company, the applicant will be required to help with other tasks, such as dubbing video masters, updating the company website and ad-hoc client service duties.

Opportunities for career development include learning Baselight colour grading software in full; it’s system architecture, colour grading techniques and Digital Cinema practices, as well as the chance to learn other finishing systems like Autodesk Flame.
